Privacy Policy
Last updated: June 19, 2026
This is an initial version, published so we're upfront about how WoWSnapShots works during its beta. It is pending review, may be updated, and is not legal advice.
WoWSnapShots (“we”, “us”) is a free, fan-made project that turns a World of Warcraft character’s public history into cinematic profiles and memory videos. This policy explains what we collect, why, who we share it with, and your rights. We are not affiliated with or endorsed by Blizzard Entertainment. Questions or requests: support@wowsnapshots.com.
Information we collect
Public World of Warcraft character data
When you look up a character, we fetch that character’s publicdata from Blizzard’s World of Warcraft API — for example name, realm, region, race, class, level, achievements, mounts, equipment, and raid progression. This is the same public Armory data Blizzard already exposes. You can look up characters without signing in.
Battle.net account data (when you sign in)
Signing in is optional and uses Battle.net OAuth with the openid wow.profile scopes. When you connect Battle.net we receive:
- your Battle.net account identifier (a stable ID, used to own your saved data);
- your BattleTag, where Battle.net provides it;
- an access token that lets us read the list of WoW characters on your account and their public data, so you can save and theme them.
We never receive or handle your Battle.net password, and the sign-in does not give us your Blizzard email address or any payment details. You can revoke our access at any time in your Battle.net account settings.
Waitlist / request-access information
WoWSnapShots is in an invite-only beta. To request access:
- By email: we store the email address you enter and an optional display name, with a verification status and timestamps.
- By Battle.net: we store your BattleTag, your Battle.net account identifier, and your region. (We store an email here only if Battle.net actually provides one; normally it does not.)
Technical & usage data
We process your IP address for security, rate-limiting, and bot protection (and it may be recorded with invite redemptions and in standard server logs), along with your browser/user-agent. We also record first-party activity events (such as sign-ins, character lookups, theme changes, and page views) to operate and improve the service.
Payments
WoWSnapShots is a free, non-commercial fan project. We do not collect payments and we do not handle any payment information.
Support & issue reports
If you submit an in-app issue report, we store the report and any screenshot you choose to attach (screenshots are kept in Cloudflare R2 object storage).
How we use your data
- to build and display character profiles, snapshots, and videos you request;
- to authenticate you and link saved data to your account;
- to run the invite-only beta and the waitlist, and to send transactional emails (waitlist verification and invites);
- to keep the service secure and prevent abuse;
- to understand usage and improve the product.
We do not sell your personal data and do not use it for third-party advertising.
Legal bases (EEA/UK)
Where the GDPR/UK GDPR applies, we rely on: performance of a contract (providing the service you ask for), legitimate interests (security, anti-abuse, and improving the product), consent where required, and legal obligation where applicable.
Who we share data with (processors)
We use a small set of service providers, only as needed to run WoWSnapShots:
- Blizzard Entertainment — Battle.net sign-in and the World of Warcraft data and character-render APIs.
- Resend — sending transactional email (waitlist verification, invites).
- Cloudflare — bot protection (Turnstile), DNS/CDN and reverse proxy in front of the site, and R2 object storage for issue-report screenshots.
- Contabo — the server hosting where the application and its databases (PostgreSQL, Redis) run.
- Zam Network / Wowhead — provides the item-tooltip script loaded in your browser; because your browser requests it directly, your IP and user-agent are visible to them.
International transfers
Some of these providers are based in the United States. Where we transfer personal data out of the EEA/UK, we rely on appropriate safeguards (such as Standard Contractual Clauses) where required.
Data retention
- Saved snapshots / character history: kept according to your plan — Free up to 30 days, Pro up to 365 days, Guild indefinitely while your account is active.
- Account profile: kept while your account exists.
- Waitlist entries: kept until access is granted or you ask us to remove them.
- Logs, activity events, invite redemptions, issue reports, and survey responses: retained for a limited period for security, record-keeping, and product analytics.
Deleting your account in-app removes your profile, saved snapshots, videos, and usage events. Some records above are retained separately; email us and we will delete those too where we are able.
Your rights
You can request to access, correct, delete, export, or restrict/object to the processing of your personal data, and to withdraw consent where processing is based on it. Signed-in users can delete their account directly in account settings. If you are in the EEA/UK, you also have the right to lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority. To exercise any right, email support@wowsnapshots.com.
Cookies
We use only the cookies needed to run the site — no advertising or third-party analytics cookies:
- Session cookie (next-auth) — keeps you signed in after Battle.net sign-in.
- Beta cookies (
wss_access,wss_invite,wss_wl) — signed tokens that remember beta access / an invite / a passed bot check. - Cloudflare Turnstile — set by Cloudflare for the bot-protection challenge.
- The Wowhead tooltip script may set its own cookies when loaded in your browser.
Children
WoWSnapShots is not directed to children under 13 (or under 16 in the EEA), and we do not knowingly collect their data. Battle.net has its own minimum-age requirements for sign-in.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as the project evolves. We will revise the “Last updated” date above and, for material changes, provide a more prominent notice.
